Washington (CNN)A small fire at an apparent homeless encampment less than a mile away from the US Capitol Building on Monday prompted Capitol Police to put the building on lockdown for over an hour "out of an abundance of caution," a reflection of the heightened state of alarm at the complex.
The U.S. Capitol Building was placed in a brief lockdown in response to what announcements on the grounds described as an "external security threat," Fox News has learned.
Authorities scrambled on Monday morning to respond to a fire in the general area of the U.S. Capitol ahead of President-elect Joe Biden’s inauguration later this week.
A rehearsal for the inauguration had to be called off and everyone in attendance evacuated on Monday morning due to an 'external security threat' that turned out to be nothing more than a fire beneath a nearby bridge.
