Republican Sen. Dan Sullivan will win reelection in Alaska, CNN projected Wednesday, defeating independent Al Gross, who was running with the backing of national Democrats.
Alaska Republican Sen. Dan Sullivan on Wednesday won reelection over Democratic challenger Al Gross, putting Republicans at 50 seats in the U.S. Senate compared to Democrats' 48, according to a projection from the Associated Press.

The state has long been a Republican stronghold, though many voters in Alaska don't belong to a party. The last time voters there backed a Democratic presidential candidate was in 1964. Alaska has elected one Democratic senator in four decades: Mark Begich, who served one term before losing to Sullivan in 2014.

Sullivan, who was first elected in 2014, was ahead of Independent Al Gross by 20 points when the race was called, leading 57% to 37%.
